It may have been a little bit ago, but yours truly were had a quick feature in Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference last month! It was unexpected and totally awesome. Thank you to the anonymous force behind this shout out! Towards the end of the address, Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president of iOS software, can be seen showing off the new version of the Maps app and he uses our shop to demo how users will find businesses on Maps! Bing! Here’s the video. Check out the 99th minute for our little highlight.
They said they cataloged 100 million businesses and chose us. We feel like we won the lottery! Thank you for all your support!

Golden Gate Bridge 75th + Memorial Day

75 years old and not a single grey hair!

75 years old and not a single grey hair!

Our beloved Golden Gate Bridge is turning 75 years old this weekend! (although at the shop we have questions as to when exactly a bridge is born/birthed ie whether it starts at the first concrete pour or upon the opening to traffic). In observance of this grand occasion (and memorial day), the shop will be closed on Sunday the 27th and Monday the 28th. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this might cause. In the meantime, check out this cool photo of the Golden Gate Strait before there was the bridge, as well as some awesome shots of its construction like this and this, this one as well as this one. Enjoy the weekend!

NAHBS 2012 - Sacramento

NAHBS Sacramento

NAHBS Sacramento

For those of you who are into bikes and live under a rock, (or I guess you could just ride and not care much about hand built bikes) the North American Handbuilt Bike Show was this past weekend in our state’s lovely capital of Sacramento. Click on the banner, or here to see the rest of our pics! What a treat to have some of the worlds greatest frame builders all gather and show off their greatest contributions to bicycle design. Tom Ritchey was there, as were Joe Breeze, Steve Potts, Rick Hunter, Ira Ryan, Dave Bohm, Richard Sachs, Soulcraft, Iglis (and Retrotec), Dave Wages of Ellis Cycles, Chris Bishop, Naked Cycles and a whole host of others. Some of the things Mr Chain found most interesting include some of the tooling rarely seen by those not building the frames. Anvil Bike Works was on prominent display, as was Sputnik and a whole host of lug and tube manufacturers. I was a little surprised to only see two fit bikes at the show - we were expecting a few more variations.

Everyone had impressive showings, with our buddy Chris Bishop running away with 3 awards! Big congratulations to him! Other winners include Steve Potts, Ellis Cycles, Shamrock Bicycles and Muse Cycles to name a few. Cherubim also showed off this very unsual piece of bling (even tho its … you know, the North American handbuilt show… were not here here to hate, just appreciate.) It was also nice to be exposed to some up and coming builders including shop friend Megan at Moth Attack and Raphi at Raphael Cycles (SF represent!) Some of my favorite bikes on display were the cargo bikes built by Josh Muir at Francis Cycles. We would have liked to see all of the heavy load and cargo bikes, including this Alcohauler all displayed together. Also being a sucker for front racks, there were quite a few variations, including this one by YiPsan and several hidden Pass and Stow racks.

We had a blast at the SF Bike Expo

We were hanging out at the SF Bike Expo last weekend (if you wernt, why not?!) and we had a great time. We missed the cross race, as many of you did, surely, but we still had a great time. Amongst the gems spotted at the bike fiesta were this totally rad Landshark tandem mountain bike. Whats not to love? The great components on it? (Magura hydraulic rim brakes :D, Kooka tandem cranks and XTR captain seatpost!) There was a nice selection of vintage steel and we were happy to see a new area that allowed some custom frame builders to showcase their work. And personally I would rather see custom bikes more than a fashion show, but to each their own. Also a shout out to Moth Attack! It was nice to see Megan again and check out some of her work. One of the fanciest bikes to see at the show was Ira Ryan’s bike built for the Oregon Manifest race last month. Really nice, clean work and a great attention to detail.

And while Mr Chain has never been the sort of rider to fly through the air off huge ramps, it is always very impressive to see. The final heats were really exciting and we witnessed more than one front flip. Totally bodacious.

Its the most wonderful time of the year!

Ride This! Watch This!

Ride This! Watch This!

Its September here in San Francsico (and the rest of the world) but its our summertime! And coupled with our wonderful weather comes tons of fun! So if you dont have any weekend plans you do now! On Saturday Niko will be hanging out (read: working hard) at the Bicycle Film Festival block party (Capp St @ 16th) doing some quick, on-the-spot repairs for all you bicycle advocates and film lovers. Come by and say hi before checking out a new film. My guess is it has something to do with a bicycle.

bikes + beer! beer + bikes + beer!

bikes + beer! beer + bikes + beer!

And then as if that wasnt enough for you, or you actually want to put in a few miles, come ride with us out to Fairfax for the 2011 Marin Biketoberfest! There will be plenty of beer and a good representation of what Northern California frame builders have to offer. Also, for you early birds, there will be a few rides-but most of us San Franciscites will probably just ride up there and get our exercise that way. Unfortunately Fairfax native Joe Breeze wont be there - he has to guest judge the Oregon Manifest Race. Gah! I wish I could be there - but oh well. Too many events for one weekend. But for those of you that cant make it to Oregon, meet up with us on Sunday morning and we can all ride to Biketoberfest like one happy family. eMail Sasha (at) CitizenChain.com for details.
